Excerpts from a Satsang by Dr Harbhajan Singh in St Gilgen on 1983-12-25 (1)
There is none (true Master) in a million,
maybe there is one in a billion.
Dear brothers and sisters,
For the new ones who are going to get initiation tomorrow many more things are to be digested. So I will try to explain something only about the Master Power: Who was Sant Kirpal Singh, who is Sant Kirpal Singh, and who will He be. He always remained in the world, He never leaves us. That is the Almighty God, that Almighty Power, who came for our survival.
You are getting this contact right directly from Him and everywhere this contact is available. Only persons are needed to give it, and that is available. You are getting it directly. That means that you are not to live in this world forever, maybe you don’t come again. This is the shortest way back (to God).
You have read some old history of the competent Masters, whereas they could bless the disciple with two, three, four births altogether but then the disciples used to prolong their journey.
Why? Time was not fit for them to go back, they had to digest more, they had to come on the path properly. They had to shed off the terrible vestures of the mind — because there are chains upon chains on the soul and nobody could get them off so easily — so a lot of people had to come back into the man-body. (In this case) even Master Power could not help. In 1972 Sant Kirpal Singh said that so far He had not initiated any new one, “You are all old, old enough.”

Some Saints come directly from above, they are already made. Some come into the world and they are in the make, and consequently they are made and put to work. They are commissioned here. Sant Kirpal Singh, however, came in the highest capacity: He came with all full powers, and there are lots of incidences at our disposal which we can read in various books.
Even while He was young, it happened that, if He went to some dying person, that person couldn’t die. As long as He was with him, he couldn’t die. The angel of death came and went back. Why was he unable to come (and take that person)? The angel of death could not enter the room (in the presence of Sant Kirpal Singh). This incidence is described by Sant Kirpal Singh in His book: “The Night Is a Jungle”, chapter: “Protector and protection”:
I will tell you of one incidence when I was living in Lahore. There was a lady who hailed from my village, but she was not a disciple. She became seriously ill, and her family endured constant sleepless nights in looking after her. I heared that she was sick, and went to see her, accompanied by Dalip Singh (later treasurer in Sawan Ashram). I told them, “You have spent so many nights awake and must be tired, so you all sleep tonight and I will watch beside the bed.” Dalip Singh and I sat together for some time. She was not initiated, but that did not matter, and I asked her, “Do you repeat any holy name?” She affirmed that she did. I told Dalip Singh to go and rest, and return about 4 a.m., and I continued to sit beside the dying woman.
She went on repeating the holy names, as I had suggested, but suddenly she said to me, “There is an old man here.” I looked up and saw the old man, and he explained to me that she was his granddaughter, and that he had come to take her away. But I told him that he could not do so as long as I was sitting there. He tried his best to take the soul out of the body, but did not succeed. So after some moments he went away. I asked the woman if she had recognized the old man and she said, “Yes, it was my grandfather; he was a very pious man.”
After some time, Yama, the Angel of Death, appeared in the doorway. I looked straight at him, and he ran away – he could not even enter the room. He returned several times, but could not enter.
Then Dharam Raj, the Lord of Death himself, appeared, but he also could not come into the room. He said, “This soul belongs to me.” I said, “Yes, that is true, for she has not been initiated, and I know also that you cannot come near her because I am sitting here, so you had better go to my Guru and ask him what is to be done now. If he gives you permission to take this soul, then I will leave.”
My friends, just see — how great is Naam! Dharam Raj left, and in a matter of moments returned and said, “I have got the permission to take the soul.” I said, “All right, take it.” He replied, “How can I when you are still sitting there?” Whatever is written regarding the protection power of the Holy Naam is all true, for I am telling you what actually happened. Dharam Raj said, “Unless you leave, I cannot take this soul.” I asked him, “What benefit will she get from my spending the whole night beside her?” He said, “She will receive the fruit of that before any other rewards or debts are accounted.”
Just then Dalip Singh entered the room, and I said to him, “Come brother, let us go away from this room, for while I am here, she cannot die.” As we were leaving, I asked her husband to give away in her name some money which was still due from her, to some needy people – that her give and take may be squared up and she may leave the body. Dalip Singh and I stepped out of the room, and in one moment she was gone. Dalip Singh is here, you can ask him about it.

There are not one or two, many such instances happened. Sant Kirpal Singh could foretell everything about life and death. Even if some persons remembered Him and sent for Him, or He could only talk something on the telephone, that man began to recover, whereas the doctor said that it was a hopeless case. Master, however, said, “Doesn’t matter, you go on treating him, he will be alright, no problem for him!”
He had not gone to the Holy Feet of His Master then. Even when He had not been initiated and had not yet gone to the Holy Feet of His Master, He used to display such incidences, because all incidences came along with Him as earned talents. He had already earned all those talents in His previous life. He came with that capacity. He was a Saint. He went to the higher stages of Alakh and Agam, thereupon He went up to the stage of the Almighty God and He could know each and everything about the Almighty God. He Himself became the Almighty Power.
Lots of Saints came in this world, but this Power, the Almighty Power, remained hidden to them. They went to the various stages and could only tell up to these stages. They could not tell beyond their stages. Sant Kirpal Singh, however, not only told of, but also took someone along to those stages and above those stages. Go and see His glory, His beauty within!
So this lesson is for the new ones, and will be a beautiful lesson for each one of us — to step off and go ahead with the journey. Because time is too short and we have to accompany Him. He is already in the heaven, He is already in each of the planes, and He is already here. This power can materialize and can manifest and can give you this demonstration right from His own wish and will. I want to tell you with clarity and with full conviction that since you get initiation from Him, you are directly in touch with Him.
A Master Power sitting on the fifth plane — he has much work to do. He has to obey the orders from above and exactly in the same way he has to work over here (He is dependent.) But your Father now is independent. This grace comes from Him, is very independent and direct.
And as once Master told in the Satsang,
“Such grace comes after hundred thousand years.
It is not possible every moment.
It may come after hundred thousand years.”

Those who come in contact with such a grace, they do not only go themselves, but they can help lots of people after them and even before them. They stay in the world, they can help a lot and many people can be helped after them by following them. So you are going to be an example for the Master Power and for all others.
After getting initiation you have to work, you have to meditate, you have to act upon to become the co-worker of the Divine Plan. Even after getting initiation you are yet not the conscious co-worker of the Divine Plan. You are under preparation, you have to become like that, you have to work. Some persons may try their level best, but they cannot become the coworker of the Divine Plan throughout their whole life. We already saw with our own eyes, how they were fully spoiled, they could not stand on their own legs. Chances were there, but they could not make the best use of those chances and so they were led astray.
For that reason, you simply have fully to adopt what Master wishes from you. The higher the (positive) power, the more the negative power will interfere. It is a law. So in the strongest way you have to qualify yourself in this matter.
One thing is important: It is said in the Holy Scriptures, that there is none in a million, maybe there is one in a billion. So how can you find a real Master when this whole world is full of (so-called) masters? The source back according to all the competent Masters of the world (is one): they stressed the need to get it from here (Third Eye). If someone is capable of giving it right here (Third Eye), then He is something. At least He is a borrowed servant of the Master, if He is not more than that — and no one wants to become more.
All those competent Masters, though they were the Doer, they never wanted to become the Doer. They always told about their Master as Doer. In reality this time has come when a Doer is not needed.
I exactly tell you the same thing:
Only He (Master Power) is the Doer.
First thing is that in no way we have to become the doer. You may be given the work, to work for Him, or you can guide someone, or you can put someone on the path, can take lots of persons to Satsang and you are even able to give them the initiation, too, but still in no way you should become the doer. That is one thing. You may even ask a foolish person — this intellect is there — he will also like to become the doer. So the most important lesson is: In no way we should become the doer.
This ego is innate, it goes with the soul, this whole world came only out of the ego. It was determined by the negative power (Kal or Time — the outgoing expression of God) who meditated a lot of time, thousands of years. Then God Power asked him as what he wanted. He just wanted to multiply himself, so he wanted some talents from God. They were given to him, and he used these talents with full ego.
So we have the mind, that came from the third plane and when we go back, we have to leave it there. If we have a very early friendship with anybody — that is only the mind. It is our oldest friend, it came along with us and now we have to make it our fast friend. We have to advise it as what is the most important thing to leave and what is the most important thing to get back.
Unless until you don’t move your mind, it will not let you go anywhere. It may stop you from going to Satsang, it may stop you from doing meditations, it may activate you to do lots of worldly things, because the negative power becomes more alert after getting initiation.
Man simply leaves the physical body, but whatever he gains — either in good way or bad way — that goes along with him: attachment, ego, lust, greed, and all other things come along with him. He simply leaves this physical body, that is only clay which he has to leave. Then he goes into the astral body. All problems come along with the astral body, but there these things act in a more attractive way, so that it is very difficult to get rid of them in the astral plane.
These powers become more potent there, and we have to bear the consequences in the astral body, thereafter in the causal body and thereafter in the super-causal body. These are the three “gunas” (attributes of the physical, astral and causal worlds). We have to be above all! Unless until we do not come above these three “gunas”, we cannot cross the barriers.
Possibility (to solve the problems) is here — right here, in the physical body, because these possibilities come directly from above. The mind is too active here, but we can make the best use of the words of the Master. These words will help us like arrows. They are of a big success there, if used in the proper way. They can help us, if we use them right here. If we use them in the right direction, then we can get all possible help, then we can become the coworker of the Divine Plan.
These are the things that we have to decide. We have already decided to get initiation, but what have you decided about the world around you? This is what matters. Have you decided everything? When you go back home after getting initiation, how will you deal all those affairs which before you used to deal in various ways? You have to deal again and again with the same situations, but in which way will you do it now? That is the question.
After I had got initiation from the Master, I went back to my hospital. There I experienced the same thing: Some boys came there, and what did I tell them? I said, “Now I have become somebody else. I am not the same one as I was, but I have now become someone (else).” And they were very surprised to hear these words.
I had not hidden my Master. When I saw that He is the Word-personified form, that He was able to give me some experience within, which I needed very badly, then I showed His Grace to lots of people. I could convince them only through His Grace. (Note: When after initiation Bhaji’s friends came to him, he explained to them that he had decided his life and he would not continue to cooperate with them in their bad habits.) I didn’t want to become like them. Master used to say,
“If bad persons do not leave their bad habits,
why should a good person,
who is gifted with right understanding,
lose himself (his good habits)?
At least he should stand on his own legs.”

Three things are most needed:
- chastity is needed,
- contentment is needed,
- forgiveness is needed.
If you follow these three virtues, at least you cannot be affected by the world outside. Yet you are in the world, but you will be gifted with the virtues, with the Naam-Power within, but that is sufficient to take you back. It is only possible when you make the best use of it, in the theoretical way as well as in the practical way.
We have to change our angle of vision completely. You are going to get initiation, that is not sufficient. You have to change your angle of vision!
When you go back, people will look at you from all four sides, from behind, from left and right, and from front.
They will try to see the Master right from you. They will believe the Master only through you. They will not like to see the picture of the Master, if you act in one way but speak in another way. They want to see the picture of the Master only through your face. They will only be satisfied when they see you to be quite different from the person you were before. They want to see you to be an entirely different one.
Otherwise everyone knows the teaching, they want to see the difference; the teaching they already know. You have to mould your life in the different way.
So these three things are needed. If you fully adopt that way, chastity is there, contentment is there. If you are fully contented with what you have, you will not be after anything. You will solve all problems of life in a very cool and calm way. Nothing can get you away from the path, you will not be led astray, you will not be angry. Anger will not come to you, because you are not greedy. You will not be attempted by other things, this is what contentment means. Contentment has a great meaning.
There are lots of things seen in the world now: Maybe outwardly people are very polished, but from within they have become very hot. You would see some fire coming out from most of the mouths — the whole world is ablaze now. It is some power which is keeping the control in his hand.
Forgiveness is the main rule. At least something must come through you, that should content others, too. If unfortunately you have to see something, you should not see. You should not criticize, you should not even hear the criticism. Even if you happen to see all these things, don’t take it to others. Keep it, and try to dissolve it yourself. Otherwise you will be the partner of it. That is how we are multiplying our karmas. But we have to finish with these karmas.
